Royal interview unlikely to affect New Zealand

The New Zealand Prime Minister has said the country is unlikely to become a republic anytime soon, otherwise, Britain should not see Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

A journalist asked Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern if the memorable picture of the British royal family portrayed by Harry and Meghan was a break from New Zealand’s constitutional relationship with Britain.

“I have said before that I have not experienced a New Zealand hunger for significant change in our constitutional system and I do not expect it to change quickly,” he said.

Asked if he had ever asked Harry and Meghan about being in New Zealand, Ardron said they had no official capacity as far as they knew.

When asked about his personal friendship with Meghan since the couple toured the country in 2018, Ardron said he has been close.

“In the past, I had to say I had contacts here and there,” he said. I don’t think it’s worth commenting on. “
